Do you know why Jambatan Pulau Pinang is called Jambatan Pulau Pinang?
Why not Titian Pulau Pinang or just simply Pulau Pinang Bridge (for both English and BM)?
It took me about more than an hour to find out why. I suspect the word ‘jambatan’ is actually a direct translation from Penang hokkien. The word Jambatan is extracted from hokkien’s “Jam! Ban ban tan” which in simple english means, “Jam! Slowly slowly wait.“
Though the jam wasn’t the worst I’ve ever been in but it is bad enough to blow my head’s off!
So, Jambatan Pulau Pinang is actually ‘Jam, ban ban tan’ Pulau Pinang bridge. In short, we just called it Jam-ba-tan Pulau Pinang… JAMBATAN Pulau Pinang. %$@#%^%^
I’m coming back to KL tomorrow! Yay :)
