Heroes, Misfits of Science and The Greatest American Hero

I’ve been following Heroes since the day it when on air and now the show is taking its second break for Season 1. Heroes will return 23rd April which is about a month from now.

Its episode 18 now and we’ve seen pretty much of what will happen to New York city. We also know who is Sylar now and what he is up to and why some of the Heroes are trying to stop him. The excitement continues this coming April. Here’s a quick history lesson. I grew up watching Misfits of Science during my younger days. This TV series followed the adventures of a group of young superhero misfits fighting crime. Each member had their own unique power, from shrinking to controlling electricity to telekinetic powers. The team was led by Dr. Billy Hayes. The series lasted for 17 episodes before being canceled. It was a short-lived American superhero fantasy series that aired on NBC from October, 1985 to October, 1986.

Just like how I imagine myself being Hiro Nakamura in Heroes, I used to imagine myself as ‘Johnny B’ back in those days. Johnny was the guy that shoots bolts of energy from his fist. Besides fancied being Johnny, I also had an infatuation with Gloria which was played by Courteney Cox. She’s really cute back then.

Here’s some information of the characters from the series that I gathered:

  • Dean Paul Martin played Dr. Billy Hayes, the non-powered yet undisputed leader of this misfit team. Billy was a research scientist at the Humanidyne Institute.
  • Kevin Peter Hall played Dr. Elvin “El” Lincoln, Billy’s colleague and close friend. El was a towering black man who gave himself the ability to shrink to doll size via hormonal treatments. The character struggled socially because, despite being very tall and black, he played basketball poorly.
  • Mark Thomas Miller was Johnny Bukowski, a.k.a. Johnny B. He was a rock and roll musician who was electrocuted on stage, thus giving him formidable electrical powers. These same powers also granted him some limited superspeed abilities, but they also made him vulnerable to water.
  • Courteney Cox played Gloria Dinallo, a troubled telekinetic teen with a history of juvenile delinquency.
  • Mickey Jones played Arthur Beifneiter a.k.a. Ice Man, The team would drive around in an ice cream truck because Ice Man would die if he got too warm, so they kept him in the freezer. Ice Man only appeared in the pilot episode.

Now how cool would it be if the characters from Heroes can combine with the characters from the Misfits of Science. It would be such as blast! Or perhaps the Misfits turned evil and the Heroes had to fight them now. Haha… that’s a thought.

There was another short-lived superhero series, The Greatest American Hero that was aired from 1981 to 1983. I was much younger than so I don’t really know what’s the series all about but I always had a good laugh seeing Ralph, the hero in red suit trying to fly but keeps falling instead. What I love most about that series was the theme song. Check out the theme song below:
