Be Prepared. Get Yourself A Car Fire Extinguisher
Be Prepared! That’s the motto of the Scout movement around the world since 1907. This is the motto I’m sticking to ever since I became a Sea Scout during my school days.
Just heard over on the Pagi Show radio about a freak accident that happened early this morning in Cheras Taman Pertama involving 2 cars and a lorry. A girl was trapped in one of the car and it caught on fire when some by-passers arrived. A good samaritan tried to help by running over to the nearest petrol kiosk to get a fire extinguisher but to no avail as the Petrol kiosk staff refused to cooperate. The girl perished, burnt alive in the car.
A note of this incident was posted on Facebook (link below) too. The note writer also blame the petrol kiosk staff and to boycott BHP. The incident was verified by the authorities but they haven’t been able to make contact with FB note writer.

Woman Burnt To Death In Three-vehicle Accident
KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 (Bernama) — A woman was burnt to death in her Myvi car in an early morning accident in Jalan Cheras after another vehicle from the opposite side of the road skidded and hit her car which was then rammed by a three-tonne lorry carrying vegetables.
The accident happened near the Cheras velodrome at 3.30am and police are trying to identify the dead woman from the car registration number.
“From the physical appearance, this accident involves a woman driver,” Kuala Lumpur traffic police investigation officer DSP Abdullah Roning told Bernama.
Abdullah said a Toyota Vios believed to have been driven fast by a 33-year-old man skidded and veered onto the opposite side of the road.
It hit the Myvi car and crashed onto a lamp post, badly injuring both the driver and his female companion.
“The first accident made the Myvi spin a few times and it was hit by a three-tonne vegetable lorry from behind and burst into flames,” he said.
The woman driver, however, was unable to escape and was trapped in her seat and burnt to death.
The lorry driver and his attendant were unhurt.
The injured couple were sent to the nearby Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia medical centre. The remains of the woman were also sent there.
Photos of the accident were taken by an anonymous bystander.

Student dies after kiosk workers refuse to help
By M. KUMAR
KUALA LUMPUR: A man’s desperate attempt to save a woman from her burning car was in vain because petrol kiosk attendants refused to lend him their fire extinguishers despite his pleadings.
The tragic 3.30am incident yesterday happened after an accident involving the woman’s Perodua Myvi, a couple’s Toyota Vios and a lorry with two men.
The accident, on the flyover along Jalan Cheras near Jalan Loke Yew, caused the Myvi to catch fire.
Among the earliest to arrive on the scene was 31-year-old Teo Chai Yong.
He was on the phone with the emergency hotline operator when he heard the frightened screams of “Tolong! Tolong! Help me!” from a woman in a Myvi. Sparks flew from under the car.
Teo quickly drove to the nearest 24-hour petrol station, less than 500m away, hoping to find a fire extinguisher.
“As I ran up to the paying counter, I saw four fire extinguishers behind the glass door. An attendant was on the other side.
“I pleaded with him to let me have the fire extinguisher and screamed that someone was pinned inside a burning car.
“But he just stared at me and kept saying he was not allowed to open the door after hours,” Teo said.
In desperation, Teo even offered to buy the extinguishers and showed the attendant his identity card.
Shortly, a second attendant showed up beside the first man and told Teo to call the fire department if there was a fire.
In frustation, Teo rushed back to the accident scene, only to see the car, with the woman still inside, engulfed in flames.
“She was still screaming but I could do nothing. I just stood there, her screams grew more frantic before fading away,” he said in a telephone interview.
BH Petrol’s managing director Tan Kim Thiam, when contacted, expressed regret over the incident at one of their petrol stations.
He said robberies were common in those hours.
“The staff were concerned and did not respond to the request as they could not see the accident,” said Tan, who declined to comment further.
City traffic police investigations chief Deputy Supt Abdullah Roning said the woman was burnt beyond recognition and her personal identification documents were also lost in the fire.
“We believe she was a 27-year-old college student from Sarawak,” said the city police prosecution division head.
The driver of the Toyota Vios and his girlfriend were also seriously injured and were rushed to Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia here.
The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving.
It is tragic; however I feel that nobody is to blame. If there’s a need to blame on anyone, it would be on us!
WE ARE ARROGANT. WE ARE IGNORANT. WE ARE NOT WELL PREPARED!
The good samaritan was unable to attain the fire extinguisher from the petrol kiosk, hence the poor girl perished. This wouldn’t have happened if every car is fitted with a small fire extinguisher. A live would have been saved if we are all well prepared and ready for any emergencies that arise.
GET YOURSELF A FIRE EXTINGUISHER.
ABC Powder fire extinguishers are most common and have been used in a variety of scenarios for many years. The versatility of the mono-ammonium phosphate extinguishant, combined with tremendous fire knockdown capabilities have made the powder extinguisher one of the best fire extinguishers to use in almost all circumstances. It’s advisable for everyone to get one for home use and one car use. It’s not that expensive. The portable car 1 kg ABC powder extinguisher for car cost less than RM100 and a basic home fire fighting kit only cost less than RM200.
These portable fire extinguishers can last for a decade; however, annual inspection is required to ensure the extinguishers are in good working condition. Simply go back to the manufacturer of your fire extinguisher and they will service for less than RM20.
While it’s easier to blame others, I always believe that to get a job done, you gotta do it yourself. Here I’ve compiled some information on where you can get these fire extinguishers for your personal use.
