The name Table Soccer may not be a familiar name to many people but a group of Malaysians booked their tickets to Taiwan recently to meet with some of the best Table Soccer players in the world. Table Soccer, or better known as Foosball in this part of the world is not just another game, it’s a competitive sports at a whole new level – table level that is.
Thirteen talented Foosball players from Malaysia participated in the first ever Fireball World Championship Series which was held in Taoyuan, Taiwan from 18 – 22 October. The tournament is sanctioned by the International Table Soccer Federation (ITSF), a table soccer governing body based in France. Backed by World’s Best Low-Cost Airline AirAsia (and AirAsiaX), the thirteen Malaysians competed as Team AirAsia-Malaysia against some of the best Foosball players from Europe, US and Asia.
The four-day long tournament covers multiple categories – Open, Pro, Semi-Pro, Rookie, Junior, Senior and Women. All thirteen players participated in all categories except for the Junior and Senior events. At the end of the tournament, Team AirAsia-Malaysia bagged at least 3 major titles including a Mixed Doubles title. In the National Teams event, Team AirAsia-Malaysia beat Japan in an epic battle to snatch the 3rd placing after losing out to Kuwait in the semis.
Team AirAsia-Malaysia consists of Cyrus Foo, Zayd Mohd. Nor, Ryan Felix, Koay Euvern, Melvin Yap, Natalie Teh, Amanda Tan, Eugene Gerard, Benjamin Wong, Sean Lee, Victor See, Loy Ee Lin and Galvin Tan.
