The hunt for awesome Char Siu (caramelized BBQ pork) continues as I head down to KL city after a tipoff from a friend. According to my friend, this place served some really good Char Siu and braised pork dishes. So I decided to give it a try.
Jalan San Peng (San Peng Road) Chicken Rice stall is not your average Chicken Rice stall you would find in any restaurant; in fact, it’s really one of its kind. Located by the road side along Jalan San Peng in Pudu area, this stall has been operating here for quite a while already. I remember my dad mentioned about this place ages ago but I’ve never really make an effort to find this place until now.
The steamed chicken is absolutely lovely. The smooth and tender chicken breast meat is so juicy and the soya-sauce that goes with it just makes it even tastier. Can’t really remember when the last time I had such good steamed chicken; I usually don’t fancy steamed chicken but this is just too good.
I gotta admit, the Char Siu here is pretty amazing too. I’m quite particular when it comes to Char Siu, it has to have the right amount of fats and lean meat. I do not fancy those heavily caramelized Char Siu that melts in your mouth, that’s because 80% of the Char Siu is covered with fats. Sure it’s nice but… you get what I mean. The Char Siu sauce that served with it is really good, a little bit on the sweet side but it’s just goes well with the Char Siu.
Braised or ‘Loh’ pork, eggs and chitterlings are not a common dish at any Chicken Rice stalls. But expect to find some great tasting braised pork and chitterlings here. It really adds a great variety to the already tasty Char Siu and Chicken Rice served here.
And if you’re not much of a rice person, you can always opt for ‘Kuay Teow’ soup with shredded chicken and shrimp. I haven’t tried it yet but I can tell it’s a favourite here too.
Overall, the food here is above satisfactory albeit the roadside ambience. Price is reasonable too, food for four only cost RM44++.
Now parking can be quite an issue. If you go during lunch break, you’ll probably have to park further down the road along Jalan San Peng. There isn’t plenty of proper parking available; patrons will have to take the risk parking by the road side, which is quite a norm for the regulars.
