A Day Trip to Magnificent Malacca

It was yet another impromptu plan to go down to Malacca for sight-seeing and some good food. Suggested by none other that our favourite Baba, Mr. Damien Yong. One good thing about such trip is that it usually works out.

As usual, we were all late… well, except for poor Farid who had to be over in Subang since 12 noon. By the time I picked up Damien and Amy, it was already 2 pm. We had a quick lunch and off we go.

The trip down south was quite a breeze. By the time we hit the toll, it was around 4 pm. We really took our time driving down. There’s no rush and it was a holiday for us.

The purpose of the trip was for makan, makan and more makan. Our first stop was over at Tengkera. Damien suggested that we should try out the Mee Sup Tengkera and some Popiah Goreng. The Mee Sup was rather good since they use fried chicken meat floss instead of the usual boiled or steamed chicken meat. And the Popiah Goreng, gosh… excellent! Crispy on the outside, juicy and yummy on the inside.

Only the pakcik preparing the noodles. The others are helpers.

Melaka
The soup is rather plain but tasty. That’s because they use fried chicken instead of the normal chicken meat.

Melaka
The Popiah Goreng was really crispy and it’s selling like hot cakes!

Melaka
You can tell that these guys are really hungry.

Since we’ll be having more food, we decided not to over stuff ourselves and head on to the next destination for some desserts. Taking a drive through Malacca town is quite an eye-opener. The colourful and unique century old buildings are quite a sight. It’s really nice to slow down once in a while in your life, to breathe the air and to enjoy sights ancient old history. It’s quite a mesmerizing view, sometimes funny too.

Melaka
Oookaayyy, I’ve seen plenty of funny convinient stores but this is too much. LOL. Oh ya, only handsome guys are allow to have seafood in this restaurant.

We stop over in town where you can find the fountain, clock tower and Christ Church. The place was flocked with tourists and tour buses. There’s plenty of colourful trishaws too which kinda stole my attention. Trishaws are quite a rare sight especially in busy cities like KL and PJ. While the rest of them are enjoying their Cendol right across the street, I went on snapping more photos around that area.

Baba and Nyonyas?

We were quite tempted to go for the famous Chicken Rice Ball but unfortunately it was quite late and the shop was already closed. So we proceeded to the fort A‘ Farmosa. Along the way to the fort, we were quite surprised to see the changes in the town of Malacca. A few new food court and shopping complexes popped up.

After more than a century, part of the fort is still standing strong.

It brings back good memories being at fort A’Farmosa again. The last time I’ve been there was during primary school days. It was a school trip to Malacca and we visited the fort, the crocodile farm and a few other places.

It was getting late so it’s time to leave. We wanted to go for some Popiah with Chu Yau Char (fried pork lard) and some fried lala omelet but unfortunately the stall only opens at 7.30 pm. Not wanting to wait, we decided to go straight for Satay Celup at Jalan Ong Kim Wee. There are a number of restaurants serving Satay Celup but Damien brought us to Restoran Ban Lee Siang. It was my first time trying Satay Celup, although something new, I’m no stranger to food like Lok-Lok in KL.

Similar to Lok-Lok, you cook/heat up your food by dipping it into a saucy peanut gravy instead of hot boiling broth

By the time we got back to KL, it was already 10pm. Though it was a short trip, we were all really tired and we ended up in a foot reflexology parlour. Hehe.

Makan Hokkien Mee at Restoran Mey Yen, Paramount Garden PJ

As promised, here’s my next food review on Hokkien Mee as mentioned on my last posting. The name of the place is Restoran Mey Yen in Paramount Garden, PJ.

Mey Yen

For those who are familiar with PJ Paramount area, this restaurant is not really hard to find. It’s the only chinese restaurant that’s located in the alley of two rolls of shoplots along Caltex petrol station.

Restoran Mey Yen boasts of their famous ‘Hokkien Char‘ of Hokkien Mee and they did live up to that for quite some time. Whenever we’re in PJ and crave for some Hokkien Mee, we will end up in Restoran Mey Yen for some quick bite. They are pretty fast sometimes and food is usually served no longer than 10 minutes.

Last night, after watching a 7 o’clock movie in Subang, we decided to go for some Hokkien Mee. There are 6 of us, 2 of us are ladies and the rest are well known ‘big eaters’. So as usual, we ordered quite many dishes.

Mey Yen Hokkien Mee

The first dish is no other than their famous Hokkien Mee. Now Restoran Mey Yen is definitely another place I would go for Hokkien Mee anytime because they cook it just the way it should be, thick and sticky! The sauce is really thick and sticky and the taste is just nice. They used to fry their noodles on charcoal fire but too bad they had to turn to modern gas stove for speed and convenience. I don’t know why but anything that’s cooked with charcoal fire taste better. There are 6 of us, so the big plate of Hokkien Mee didn’t get cold after it was served. Yummy!

Mey Yen Yin Yong

The second dish that came was the Yin Yong and it was pretty good too. It’s not easy to dish out a good plate of cantonese fry but the cook did yet another good job. The sauce is really tasty and rather sticky too. Just the right amount of corn starch and egg mixture. The best part of Restoran Mey Yen is everything is cooked fresh; even the noodles. Unlike some other place, the bee hoon are not pre-cooked. So you don’t get that disgusting overnight cooking oil taste in your bee hoon.

Ok, men do eat their veges too; we are not all meat eaters. They next dish was Kangkong Belacan. I guess it really common to have Kangkong Belacan with noodles every now and then, right?

Mey Yen Loh Mee

The dish that came together with the vege was the Loh Mee. I have to admit, they do serve rather good Loh Mee there. Just the Yin Yong, they Loh Mee too had the right amount of corn starch and egg mixture but cooked in a different style. Loh Mee has got more starchy sauce than the Yin Yong. Oh ya, it goes well with a little bit of black vinegar.

Mey Yen Lala

I don’t know why but it’s quite common that most Hokkien Mee restaurants to serve fried lala. This is not my first time to Restoran Mey Yen and definitely not my first time trying their fried lala. I used to love their fried lala a lot but not this time. Perhaps I’ve tried better ones like the one in Restoran Aik Yuen but that is not the reason why I don’t like it so much this time. I think it’s because that the lalas are not fresh this time. Unlike others, they cooked the lalas with lots of garlics and gingers. Even that, it didn’t help to cover that strong lala smell. Too bad.

Mey Yen Pork Stew Mee Hoon

By the time the serve the last dish, we’re quite stuffed. The last dish that came was another good dish. Fried Bee Hoon with canned Khow Yuk (stewed pork). Now this dish is delicious if you love khow yuk. The mee hoon gets to absorb the khow yuk sauce and it makes the dish ever more tastier. The dish is just nice, not too saucy and the khow yuk is excellent! Fatty and tasty! Hehe.

Well, we had a good meal but was quite dissappointed with the fried lala. Though the Loh Mee was good but we didn’t finish it too as well.

Mey Yen

Even though we are big eaters, enough is enough and we do have good taste for food too. The fried lala just didn’t quite make it so I’m not really keen about having that dish again.

Wild Hogs - Born To Ride

Now here’s another movie review on Wild Hogs.

Went over to One Utama during the weekend to catch a movie. Couldn’t get TMNT so we decided to watch Wild Hogs instead and it was excellent!

Wild Hogs

Never had such a good laugh for such a long time. Wild Hogs is comedy about 4 middle-aged friends who are struggling with mid-life crisis. They seek for the true meaning of life and freedom. They share the same passion for bikes and rides together as “Wild Hogs”.  Tired of their mundane suburban routine, they decided to go on a free-wheeling trip away from the busy city live.

Wild HogsWild Hogs

Starring John Travolta(Woody), Martin Lawrence(Bobby), funnyman Tim Allen (Doug) and William Macy(Dudley) together with few other stars, they whipped up a good blend of pure comedy fun.  The best part of the movie is Marissa Tomei who plays Maggie in the movie. I adore her a lot and she’s hotter than ever now. Perhaps this is what they called “Scent of a Woman”?

Marissa Tomei

Ok, enough with Marissa Tomei and back to the show. The whole story is about four of them, set out for a once-in-a-lifetime experience for freedom on the open road, encounters more than what they expected. The road trip challenged their wits and their lucks, especially when they got into trouble with the real-deal biker group called the Del Fuegos. Everything just went bonkers after that.

Wild HogsWild Hogs

A movie worth watching with your family and friends. I’ll probably watch it again when I do get the chance.

Makan Hokkien Mee at Restoran Aik Yuen, Setapak

Here’s another review on my favourite Hokkien Mee. We decided to drive down to KL during the weekend for some good hokkien mee and we ended up in Setapak, at this restaurant right behind Tawakal Hospital. The name of the restaurant is Restoran Aik Yuen.

Restoran Aik Yuen

Restoran Aik Yuen is famous for its deep-fried homemade fish cake and hokkien mee. You can see almost every table will have at least the hokkien mee and fish cakes served. The reason why I decided to go there it’s because of the yummy ‘saito‘ fish cake. It’s crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. One bite is never enough.

Fish Cake

Aik Yuen is also famous for its hokkien mee and fried lala. Now I’ve tried so many hokkien mee stalls in Klang Valley so far, Aik Yuen is still one of my favourite. This is because they always give a generous amount of chu yau cha(fried pork lard)!.

Hokkien Mee

And for their fried lala, it’s the best so far. I love the slightly spicy sweet and sour sauce for the lala. It’s da bomb! I find that the fried lala is much better than Restoran Mey Yen in Paramount(will blog about that later). The sweet and sour sauce compliments the lala and the garlic and cili padi makes the dish more interesting! The sauce is so good that I just couldn’t resist dipping my fish cake into it.

Fried Lala

Restoran Aik Yuen is uniquely special. Even though they have an existing physical outlet, they still prefer to prepare their food outdoor. There are 3 cooks working the woks, 2 of them will be cooking all the noodle dishes and the other one will be preparing the fried lalas and fish cakes.

Outdoor Kitchen

They will serve anyone as long as there’s enough space for more tables along the street right infront of the restaurant. We were there until 10pm and there are barely any empty tables available. It’s full all the time so you have to be patient and wait around.

Customers

Overall, the food is really good. The hokkien mee is just nice, sticky and black and the lala… the best! The saito fish cake is good but slightly expensive. Anyways, who cares as long as our stomachs are happy. Just take a look at the happy patrons.

Patrons

The bill came up to RM38 for one hokkien mee (big), one fried lala (med), 2 pieces of fried fish cakes 4 glasses of herbal tea. Slightly more expensive from what we can usually get in PJ but it’s not that we go down to KL all the time for makan. Highly recommended if you want to bring your friends for some good hokkien mee and fried lala.

Makan at Restoran Fei Loh Hokkien Mee, SS2 PJ

Here’s a review on the new Fei Loh Hokkien Mee in SS2, PJ.

Being a Klangite, I’m quite an eater especially for hokkien dishes. Besides the famous Klang Bah Kut Teh, I do like other hokkien food too. When I was passing through SS2 about a week ago, something in bright blue caught my attention. Last night, I just couldn’t resist when I saw the new shop is already in business and they are serving my favourite Hokkien Mee!

Fei Loh

The shop is just located along the same roll with AFFIN-ISLAMIC Bank and it’s two shops away from SS2 Teo Chew porridge shop and the new Korean BBQ shop (formerly Foh San Restaurant branch). Kind of hard to miss it if you’re a frequent user of the road from SS14 passing thru to SS3 in PJ.

Fei Loh

The shop is brightly lighted and very cosy, that’s because they had all their aircons and ceiling fans running… for now. The deco of the shop is fairly impressive but it’s definitely nicer than the other ordinary hokkien mee shops. With the wooden tables and nice clean environment, dining there is quite comfortable. The have about 20 tables in the shop and each table can comfortably fit 4 people.

There’s only 2 of us and I wasn’t feeling very hungry so we only ordered 2 dishes, Hokkien Mee and Yin Yong Kung Fu Chow (Yin Yong Cantonese style). Oh yes, they just started business on April 6 and they are having a promo till the 16th. So any single portion dish of noodle only cost RM3. Reasonbly cheap for a plate of noodle nowadays.

Fei Loh, the boss himself took our order. Sadly, their service is rather sluggish. After waiting for 10 minutes, we still haven’t got our drinks. They even forgot our orders and had to come over to take it again. After another good 10 minutes of more, the food came.

Fei Loh Hokkien Mee and Yin Yong

The hokkien mee looks rather good (dry and slightly sticky) and the yin yong too look really good. The presentation of the food is rather nice with generous amount of pork, shrimps, sotong (squid), cabbage and most importantly, chu yau cha (fried pork lard).

Fei Loh

Though both dishes look good but sadly there’s nothing to shout about. Both dishes taste rather ordinary so we didn’t finish everything. For someone who enjoys food, I’ve tried much better hokkien mee and yin yong in some other parts of Klang Valley.

Amy eating Fei Loh hokkien mee

Amy, who was much hungrier than me wasn’t quite satisfied with the food either. You can tell from the look on her face :P

Although it’s not up to my standard, Fei Loh Hokkien Mee might appeal to others. So you don’t have to take my words for it. The bill came up to RM9.50 for 2 plates of noodle, a glass of iced soya cincau and a cup of hot tea which is rather reasonable. The only thing I like about the place is the nice clean environment. Fei Loh, the owner was quite a humble person too. Perhaps I should give it a second try one day since they have other dishes that I haven’t tried especially the fried lala.

Fei Loh Boss

Here’s the owner, he really lives up to his name :)
