Review: Cowboys and Aliens (2011)
What can we tell from the title of a movie? Cowboys and Aliens, pretty straight forward, right? Yes, it’s a movie based entirely on Cowboys and Aliens (and not forgetting native Indians too). However, it takes an acquired taste to actually enjoy this movie and I’m glad that I have it. Unlike any other ‘ET’ movies that hit the big screen recently, Cowboys and Aliens is surprisingly quite an entertaining movie to watch.
Surely we have a couple of great actors topped with a hot looking actress in it. But it’s not the gun-slinging action or ugly-looking aliens that got me glued to my seat the entire show. Surprisingly, it was how the storyline goes that kept me on my seat (even though it was the second row from the screen). Yeah sure, it’s typical but what the heck, I still like it.
The movie is directed by Actor/Producer/Director Jon Favreau. Never heard of Jon Favreau? Well, you’ll probably know the multi-talented guy as Happy Hogan in Iron Man 2. Yes, Tony Stark’s trusty ol’ helper that brought him his mobile Iron suit on the Monte Carlo race track. No don’t worry, there’s no exoskeleton suit in this movie.
The movie was rated PG13 in Malaysia when I first watch it, however, I honestly feel that it should be rated 18SG instead.
A spaceship arrives in Arizona, 1873, to take over the Earth, starting with the Wild West region. A posse of cowboys and natives are all that stand in their way.
Starring Daniel Craig as Jake Lonergan, a wanted outlaw with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town. Also starring Harrison Ford as the influential Woodrow Dolarhyde who runs a cattle business in the tiny town. Both of them did not get along well which each other at first but eventually teamed up for the good of humanity.
Ella Swensen is an unusual lady who wanted revenge for what the aliens did to her people. She went around looking for Jake Lonergan as he is the only person who knows the location of the Aliens. Ella’s character is played by Olivia Wilde, you’ll probably know her better as Quarro from the movie Tron: Legacy.
Of all the other Alien movies out lately, Cowboys and Aliens is definitely one of the best movie so far. Unlike Skyline and Battle Los Angeles, I managed to follow through the entire story. Although there are some puzzling beginning, at the end it all became clear.
It’s great to see Harrison Ford back in action as I am a big fan of Indiana Jones. As for Daniel, oh Daniel is just great with his character. If Bond were to be a cowboy, he will definitely be Jake Lonergan. Olivia is just simply amazing. If you love her in Tron: Legacy, you’ll love her in Cowboys and Aliens too.
I’ll give it a rating of 3.5/5.
