Review : Unboxing Of The Samsung Galaxy S (Part 1)

Samsung Galaxy S is creating a wave in the Asian market. Samsung Galaxy S (GT-i9000) was already released in South Korea, and the company claims it has sold over 200,000 Samsung Galaxy S mobile phones in just less than 10 days!

Just 2 weeks ago, Maxis Berhad launched the new Samsung Galaxy S and once again I’m lucky enough to do hands on review for this so-called ‘killer’ smartphone.

It’s always an exciting moment when I’m about to unwrap a gift or a new toy. I always feel like a kid again whenever I get to unwrap anything new.

First Impression

I was taken by surprise when I first saw the phone. The Samsung Galaxy S looks almost identical to an iPhone… only slightly larger. The 4.0 inch Super AMOLED screen was truly remarkable. I’m also impressed by how light and slim the phone was, even with the battery on. Perhaps it’s because of the super glossy plastic body of the Samsung Galaxy S. The phone that I had was in Metallic Black and the gloss finishing on the phone was absolutely gorgeous.

Just like most of the latest smartphones out there, the Samsung Galaxy S also comes with a built-in 5.0 megapixel and external speaker on the back. However, the Samsung Galaxy S does not have a built-in LED flash.

The Power On/Off button is placed on the left side of the phone which can be quite inconvenient and uncomfortable if you’re right-handed. It’s much more comfortable for me to hold the phone with my left hand. My fingers can reach the Power On/Off button easily and still having a firm grip on the phone. Then again, the Samsung Galaxy S is a huge phone even for my palm.

Samsung Galaxy S Spec-Facts

The Samsung Galaxy S is arguably the fastest smartphone in the market currently. Power-packed with 1GHz application processor and finely tuned with Android OS 2.1 (Eclair), working around on this phone is definitely a pleasant experience.

The Samsung Galaxy S comes with a vibrant Super AMOLED 4.0 capacitive touchscreen and is equipped with a 5-megapixel auto-focus snapper with HD video recording capabilities; not forgetting the front mounted camera for video call of VGA resolution.

The phone supports 2.5G (GSM/ GPRS/ EDGE): 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz frequencies, as well as for 3G (HSDPA 7.2Mbps, HSUPA 5.76Mbps): 900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz bands, along with Bluetooth 3.0, USB v2.0 (High-Speed) and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n capabilities. Additionally, users will also be able to enjoy the handset’s A-GPS for advanced LBS (Location Based Services).

The Samsung Galaxy S also packed with great multimedia features with support for mpeg4, H.264, H.263, H263Sorenson, DivX HD/ XviD, VC-1 video files and for MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, OGG, AMR-NB, WAV, MID, AC3, IMY, FLAC, XMF audio formats, and also provides an enhanced Internet browsing experience through the Layar Reality Browser with support for Augmented Reality.

Other specifications of the handset include the 16GB / 8GB internal memory space, coupled with memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space, a 1500 mAh battery, Accelerometer, Digital compass, Proximity, Light sensors, Integrated Messaging ‘Social Hub,’ support for SMS, MMS, Email, Video Messaging, and Exchange ActiveSync, as well as for Mobile Widgets and applications downloadable from the Android Market. The new phone measures 64.2 x 122.4 x 9.9mm and weighs in at 118g.
