Pacific Rim: Know Your Jaegers

Jaeger Sketches

After watching Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, I’ve grown fond of those battle robots called Jaegers. From the movie, it seems that there were plenty of Jaegers built and destroyed during the epic battle between mankind and the invading alien monsters called Kaijus. However, there were five notable Jaegers that I would like to share with other fans.

Cherno Alpha (RUS)

Cherno Alpha Specs

Cherno Alpha is a Russian Jaeger. It is piloted by Aleksis Kaidonovsky and his wife Sasha Kaidonovsky.

As of now not much is known about this Jaeger. Cherno Alpha hails from Russia, and is one of the heaviest and best armored Jaegers.

Deployed with Crimson Typhoon in the battle of Hong Kong, Cherno engages an Otachi in combat when he is attacked by a Leatherback from behind, and at the same time, Striker Eureka runs to try and help, but Cherno is completely dismantled by the Kaiju duo before Eureka arrives.

Coyote Tango (JPN)

Coyote Tango Specs

Coyote Tango is a Japanese Jaeger. It once was one of the oldest Jaeger’s in active duty before its recent retirement from combat.

Coyote Tango, piloted by Stacker Pentecost and his co-pilot Tasmin Sevier, defeated the Kaiju Onibaba in Tokyo. A battle witnessed time and again in flashbacks by one survivor, Mako Mori. After Tokyo events the Jaeger was finally retired.

Crimson Typhoon (CHN)

Crimson Typhoon is a Chinese Mark-4 Jaeger piloted by the Wei triplets. It was launched in August 22, 2018.

Crimson Typhoon was first constructed underneath the Shatterdome located in Hong Kong to combat the Kaiju threat that invaded China.

Along with Striker Eureka and Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon is dropped into Hong Kong by helicopter prior to the battle. He is seen to face off against an Otachi with his spinning claws. It is thought that it meets a similar fate to Cherno Alpha.

Gipsy Danger (USA)

Gipsy Danger Specs

Gipsy Danger is an American Jaeger. As a Mark-3 Jaeger, it is one of the oldest mechs still in active service after Cherno Alpha.

Gipsy Danger is the last Jaeger to arrive on the scene at the battle of Hong Kong and proceeds to save Striker Eureka after it is disabled by an EMP burst from the Leatherback.[4] Gipsy Danger then proceeds to fight off both Leatherback and Otachi alone in the city. Raleigh is heard making an attack command called “Elbow Rocket”, where Gipsy Danger proceeds to deliver a rocket propelled punch to Leatherback using thrusters in the back of it’s elbow.

Striker Eureka (AUS)

Striker Eureka Specs

Striker Eureka is an Australian-built Jaeger designed to defend the coastline of Australia from the Kaiju. It is stationed at the Sydney Shatterdome.

As a Mark-5, Striker Eureka is the latest model in the Jaeger Program. Holding the best stats of all currently deployed Jaegers as well as the highest kill count, Striker Eureka is the most powerful Jaeger currently being deployed in the field of combat against the Kaiju. The Australasian division of the PPDC invested a reported 100 Billion Australian Dollars into the creation of Striker to create the most powerful Jaeger on the planet.

Striker is initially piloted by Herc and Chuck Hansen. However, during the assault on the Breach, Stacker Pentecost replaces Herc for the mission after he is injured.

Review: Pacific Rim (2013)

Watching this movie is like reliving my childhood days, being glued to the TV watching Ultraman fighting monstrous alien creatures. It also reminded me of my Sundays spent in One Utama playing MechWarrior simulator the whole afternoon. I dare say only kids from the 70s and 80s will truly appreciate this piece of fine Sci-Fi art by Guillermo del Toro.

Guillermo del Toro is no stranger in the movie world as he has directed a number of great fantasy and Sci-Fi movies such as Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth.Pacific Rim is set in the future where soldiers pilot giant robots/mechas (Jaegers) into battle against giant alien monsters (Kaijus) that have risen from a portal beneath the ocean.

The Plot

Just like any Sci-Fi movies, mankind face extinction from the invading giant alien monsters, also known as Kaiju from the deep. To save the mankind, humans begin building and piloting giant mechanical robots, also known as Jaeger into battle in desperate attempt to save the world from apocalypse.

The Cast

You will not see familiar names in the list of cast for Pacific Rim. So do not expect a Star-studded lineup.

For starter, you will see Charlie Hunnam playing the role of Raleigh Becket, one of the pilots for Gipsy Danger. And then you have Yancy Becket, Raleigh’s brother who is the other pilot for Gipsy Danger, acted by Diego Klattenhoff. The heroine, Mako Mori is acted by Academy Award nominee, Rinko Kikuchi.

The only two actors that I can recognize are Ron Perlman, acting the role of Hannibal Chau and Idris Elba as Marshal Stacker Pentecost. Yes, Ron Perlman plays Hellboy in Hellboy I & II and Idris plays Moreau in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

They may not be the usual suspects of Planet Hollywood but they are bunch of talented cast.

Summary

If you’re a big fan of Ultraman and Transformer, you will like this movie. There’ll be plenty of awesome looking Jaegers and Kaijus. Also be prepared for plenty of explosions and destructions. Makes you feel like a kid playing Godzilla trampling on big cities all over again. Suddenly, I’m a fan of Jaegers and Kaijus.

A definitely must watch movie for 2013 and here’s a tip, stay back a little while after the end credits. I give it a rating of 4.0/5.0.

Review: The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

It’s been quite a while I’ve done a proper movie review. Yeah yeah, I know I haven’t been watching movies lately but I did manage to catch a couple of movies this year. However, none is worthy enough for a mention on my blog until this movie came along.

Thanks to P1, I got an invite to catch the premier screening of The Dark Knight Rises at TGV Sunway Pyramid, two days before public release. The Dark Knight Rises is Christopher Nolan’s third installation to the epic film series of Batman, a sequel to Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008). The Dark Knight Rises is intended to be the conclusion of the series.

The Plot

Continuing the story of The Dark Knight, who went into exile for taking the blame for Harvey Dent’s death in order to restore peace in Gotham City. For the next eight years, Batman was nowhere to be seen and Bruce Wayne separated himself from the society. However, the mysterious appearance of Selina Kyle (a.k.a Catwoman from DC Comics) set a line change reaction and bring upon a ruthless terrorist called Bane. Bane threatens to destroy Gotham City and once again the city is in need of a hero.

The Cast

Christian Bale as Batman/Bruce Wayne
Christian Bale plays Bruce Wayne, a billionaire socialite dedicated to protecting Gotham City from the criminal underworld.

Tom Hardy as Bane
Bane is a ruthless terrorist who set to destroy Gotham City. A worthy villain as Bane tested Batman on both on mental and physical level. If you’ve seen the trailer, you’d probably figure out how he looks like in the movie. He’s just like Hannibal Hector on steroids and he is as strong as a gorilla. You’d probably recognize Tom Hardy as Eames from the movie, Inception.

Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle
The gorgeous Anne Hathaway plays Selina Kyle, a cat burglar described as “an associate” of Bane who later establishes a relationship with Batman. She’s good and bad news for Batman.

Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth
And as before, Michael Caine plays Alfred, Bruce’s trusted butler and confidant. Alfred has acted as a father figure to Bruce, and continues to aid Bruce on his missions as well as supplying him with useful advice.

Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate
Marion Cotillard plays Miranda Tate, a member of the Wayne Enterprises executive board who encourages a still-grieving Bruce Wayne to rejoin with society and continue his father’s philanthropic works. You’d probably know Marion as Mal in the movie Inception too.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake
Perhaps a more notable character in The Dark Knight Rises is John Blake. He is a young police officer whose instincts lead him to believe that there is trouble on the horizon. He made quite an impact to the restoration of peace in Gotham City under the leadership of Commissioner Gordon. Joseph too was in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster movie, Inception.

Gary Oldman as James Gordon
Gary Oldman plays Commissioner Gordon, Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department, and one of the city’s few honest police officers.

Summary

Now I’m not gonna spoil the whole show so here’s make take on the story. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight is no longer a fancy hero in a costume with gadgets popping out from his belt. The Dark Knight is a serial brawler. The direction of a raw fist fighting makes the Dark Knight, manlier.

When you’re a brawler, you don’t need any fancy gadget. However, The Dark Knight do have some pretty cool vehicles is his armory. Although they plot is rather straight forward, it is however, pretty hard to predict the outcome of the story. Yes, this movie is full of surprises.

 Watch It or Ditch It?

If you’ve watched the previous Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, then YES, you must watch The Dark Knight Rises. Now for those who haven’t got a clue about the previous two movies, you can still watch it. Although The Dark Knight Rises is a continuing sequel of The Dark Knight, you will still be able to understand the movie. If not, the action packed brawling scene will keep you glued to your seat.

I give a rating of 4.5/5.0

Review: Shutter Island (2010)

I was very skeptical about yet another horror thriller movie like Shutter Island. When I first heard of the name, I thought it could be another one of those ghostly movies by the Thais or the Koreans. When I found out it was starred by Leonardo DiCaprio, I decided to give it a chance and keep an open mind about the show.

The Plot
Drama is set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island. He and his newly appointed partner is assigned to the island to investigate and to locate the missing murderess. What they discovered on the island then is totally mind-boggling.

The Cast
The two U.S. Marshals are starred by Leonardo DiCarprio and Mark Ruffalo (13 going on 30 and Just Like Heaven). Michelle William plays Delores Chanal, Teddy Daniels’ departed wife who is constantly haunting his thoughts. Ben Kingsley (Guru Tugginmypudha of The Love Guru) plays Dr. John Cawley, the resident doctor and the person who is responsible for the founding of Shutter Island.

Summary
Hollywood movie is still Hollywood movie. It tends to be quite predictable at times. 25 minutes into the show, I’ve already figured out the character although the storyline eludes my expectation. The movie has an open ending, it lets you decide all the possible alternative endings but I must say that the director’s ending  is quite a cliche.

A must watch… err maybe. Worthy to watch, definitely. I give it a rating of 3.5/5.
