Samsung Galaxy Gear – It’s A Smartwatch, But Nowhere To Be Seen

[portfolio_slideshow]

Now let’s talk a little about the Galaxy Gear. I had a brief moment with the Galaxy Gear during the launch. But it was during the workshop, I really get to play around with it. The Galaxy Gear allows you to relive your childhood days playing sci-fi games with your friends – talking to your friends through a communication device on your wrist. Now if you want to know the specs of the Galaxy Gear, you can find out the info here.

Samsung did a decent job creating a wearable device that feels classy enough with fairly elegant design.  The watch face is constructed with stainless steel, whose contoured shape helps it wrap around the wrist. So how comfortable the 73.8g watch is will depend largely on how your wrist is shaped. My wrist fits in quite comfortably but can’t really say the same for others. As for the display, we’re not going to spend much time on the resolution – it’s a 1.63-inch panel with 320 x 320 resolution, so don’t expect HD quality here.

What comes in really handy with the Galaxy Gear is the built-in camera and microphone. Now let’s not get any wild ideas here, we’re not into any James Bond movie here, but taking photo is really snappy and recording quick voice note is just a swipe away. Although the Galaxy Gear’s preset apps are highly customizable, the Galaxy Gear can only be customized when it is paired with Galaxy Note 3 and Note 3 alone – at least for now. The Gear will soon be compatible with more Samsung smartphones via the soon to be released Android 4.3 update which Samsung is releasing in phases.

With all the hype built around the Galaxy Gear, Samsung’s revolutionary smartwatch is nowhere to be seen yet. Although Galaxy Gear was launched together with Galaxy Note 3 back in September, many consumers had to wait for the actual unit to arrive at a much late date.  And with a price tag of RM999, I won’t expect to see many of these smartwatches around.

SUMMARY

Currently, the Galaxy Gear is definitely the ultimate companion device for the Galaxy Note 3. And as time passes by, the Gear will be also great companion for many other Samsung’s smartphones in the market. However, I can only see Gear as an independent wearable tech when Samsung’s Gear Manager app is available for download on other Android devices.

Three Important Notes About Samsung Galaxy Note 3

[portfolio_slideshow]

After getting a chance for a hands-on experience with the Galaxy Note 3 and Gear before it was launch, and after spending more than a month with the Galaxy Note 3, it is high time for me to share my experience on the Galaxy duo with my fellow readers.

Thanks to the good people from Samsung Malaysia, I had the opportunity to try out the Galaxy Note 3 with the Galaxy Gear before anyone in Malaysia had their hands on it; part of the perks of being a tech blogger. Well, as much as I would like to share my experience on both devices, it was rather a disappointing moment to know that the Galaxy Gear was not available for review. However, we get to really try it out during the tech bloggers’ workshop session.

During my review period, I had the chance to show the Galaxy Note 3 to some of my friends and family members. Surely, they all have their fair share of comments since some of them already owned a Note 2 or some other Galaxy brand smartphones. After hearing what they have to say, and with my self-discovery on the devices, I can easily note down 3 things about the Galaxy Note 3 and Gear to share with my fellow readers.

NOTE 1: TIMING – A LITTLE BIT TOO SOON

As much as Samsung wants to the world to accept it, the Galaxy Note 3 is not just for anyone – and especially those who have already owned a Galaxy Note 2. Many Galaxy Note 2 owners are either too proud with their Note 2 or too shy to admit that they have not fully utilized their existing device. However, I do hear a lot of Note 2 users not wanting to upgrade simply because their device is still pretty ‘new’ to them. Can’t blame them since most Note 2 owners I know only had their device for less than 6 months and so.

Although early adopters may not be tempted to switch to the new Note 3, I would strongly suggest new users who are keen to have a new and larger display smartphone to seriously consider the Galaxy Note 3.

NOTE 2: THE S PEN – THE EXECUTIVE’S MAGIC WAND

During the workshop session, we’ve been taught how to use the S Pen for the Note 3. It was a cool learning experience at first, but when we’re on our own, we’re happier touching the large screen with our fingers than with the S Pen – also the fear of losing it (yes, it’s quite costly to buy a new one).

Although the S Pen is a great feature on the Galaxy Note series, many owners do not use it as often or at all. After attending the workshop, I’ve got the notion that the Galaxy Note 3 is all about the S Pen, but that did not fancy many existing Note 2 users I know. I myself hardly use the S Pen, except for that one moment I needed to write down a phone number using the Action Memo on the Air Command feature. While the Galaxy Note 3 has got a huge real estate but it’s still not big enough to doodle properly – and it’s almost impossible to doodle on the Note 3 with the S Pen when you’re inside the train or while you’re on a road trip?

However, the S Pen is the only thing that sets apart Note 3 from other smartphones in the market. While the S Pen may not tickle my fancy or impress many average Joes, I can think of a hundred other reasons how the S Pen could benefit an elite group of people. The S Pen is truly a unique experience for the Note 3 and many done easily, especially with its superb hand-writing recognition. So one thing’s for sure, the Note 3 will definitely appeal to the corporate executives who are always busy and need quick access to a mobile office on the go.

NOTE 3: WHILE LARGER SCREEN MATTERS, BULK ISN’T

While one of the selling points of the Note 3 is its large 5.7-inch touchscreen display, the device itself is also way too bulky – or at least to me. While I’m used to carrying bulky stuff in my front pocket, the Note 3 is still way too big to fit inside my front pocket together with my wallet and my keys.

However, I have to admit that there are moments that I truly enjoy the larger screen; reading and playing game is much easier with less strain to my eyes.

So unless you’re carrying a man bag all the time, or you wear a suit with ample pocket space, then I would encourage you to seriously consider the Galaxy Note 3. As for the ladies, they’ll definitely be no problem at all.

SUMMARY

The Galaxy Note 3 is truly an amazing smartphone. But however great it is, the Galaxy Note 3 is still a device that is only for an elite group of people. Note 3 will appeal to consumers because of its large screen and classy design. I’m very sure many will want it, but only a small group of people will truly appreciate it. Then again, this is entirely from where I stand; from my point of view; the way I see it and you don’t have to agree with it.

Samsung Upped the Ante with Golden Galaxy S4

golden_s4

Just two weeks after Apple unveiled its champagne-gold iPhone 5S, Samsung is quick to respond and doubled up with not just one, but two versions of Golden Galaxy S4.

In a clever move to keep them in the spotlight, Samsung Arabia revealed the Galaxy S4 Gold Brown and Gold Pink editions via Facebook and Twitter on Wednesday.

At the moment, it looks like the devices will only be available in the Middle East, should there be a demand for these new colours, we’ll most likely to see some gold variant in other market as well.

IFA Berlin 2013: Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Gear and Sony QX Lenses

Here’s a quick recap of what I find really cool from IFA Berlin 2013 recently. Samsung just announced the launch of Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and a new wearable technology called Galaxy Gear which most or less a smartwatch. Sony isn’t missing out the action and pretty much wowed the consumers with their amazing QX Lenses. Let’s take a quick look at these great gadgets that will be coming our way.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Samsung Galaxy Note 3
Samsung took the stage in Berlin and announced the new Galaxy Note 3 following the success of Galaxy Note 2 just year ago.

The Galaxy Note 3 sticks close to its winning formula. This time enlarging the Super AMOLED display to 5.7 inches, adds a whopping 3GB of RAM and powered it with a 2.3GHz quad-core processor. Samsung also gave the camera resolution a boost to 13 megapixels, and simultaneously trims the fat so it can be a millimeter thinner at 8.3mm and a shade lighter at 168g.

Perhaps the major highlight for the Galaxy Note 3 is the Air Command. This menu pops up any time you extract the S Pen from its silo and can be interacted by hovering the stylus right close to the display. From the Air Command launcher, you can access all the central S Pen features — dubbed Action Memos, Pen Window, S Finder, and Scrapbook. Watch the video below and have a better picture yourself.

Samsung Galaxy Gear

Samsung Galaxy Gear
Next up is the must-anticipated Galaxy Gear. After waves of rumours and leaked photos, the Galaxy Gear is finally shown to the world. The Galaxy Gear is Samsung’s attempt to jump into the Wearable Technology bandwagon. Although such technology is nothing new but it’s still rather new and has plenty of room for improvement. Now the same goes for the Galaxy Gear.

Although it is supposedly a smartwatch, Gear comes with a relatively small screen which measures 1.63 inches diagonally. Users can receive e-mails, share pictures and use myriad apps designed for Gear. Just like the Google Glass, Gear does not function as a stand-alone device and must be paired with a Samsung phone or tablet. It is reported that Gear could be targeted more towards athletes and runners.

Galaxy Gear has 512 megabytes of RAM and an internal memory of four gigabytes. It has an 800-megahertz, single-core central processing unit and weighs 73.8 grams. It is also equipped with a 1.9-megapixel camera on the strap with 720p video capture. Available colors include lime green, oatmeal beige, wild orange, mocha gray, jet black and rose gold.

Sony QX Series Lenses

Sony DSC- QX10
Sony did not miss the opportunity to wow their fans and consumers. By introducing their DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100 lenses, Sony is truly looking thing from a different perspective… literally.

The DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100 lenses are actually lenses with fully functional camera features that can be attached to any Android or iOS smartphone which acts as a digital viewfinder. Using the PlayMemories app, users can trigger the shutter, zoom in and out, and change basic settings on the lens attachment to snap their favourite image.

The DSC-QX100 is the flagship version and has a 20.2MP Exmor R sensor. It’s equipped with an f/1.8 Zeiss lens capable of 3.6x optical zoom, and even has a manual-focus/zoom adjustment ring. The less-powerful DSC-QX10 uses a 1/2.3″ 18.2MP sensor, an f/3.3 Sony G lens with 10x optical zoom, and will be available in black or white and come with mechanical smartphone mounts.

If you’re wondering how these ‘attachable’ camera lens is going to help you to be a creative amateur photographer? Well, just simply check out this video and you’ll find out how wonderful these lenses can be.
