U Mobile signs partnership with ZTE and Huawei

What more can I say, U Mobile just gets better and better every day. The most dynamic and innovative telco is staying true to their commitment by extending their partnership with two leading network solutions providers – ZTE Corporations and Huawei Technologies.

U Mobile recently announced an aggressive expansion strategy to strengthen its network through the roll-out of 1,000 3G and 1,000 4G LTE sites worth up to RM1.5 billion of total investment. Through this partnership, both ZTE and Huawei are chosen to be the preferred partners to rollout U Mobile’s landmark network expansion due to their track record of being one of the leading global telecommunication solutions providers with extensive experience in the field and state-of-the-art technology and network.

I can understand why U Mobile is putting so much trust on their partners.

ZTE Corporation has a global presence in 160 countries, and is one of the industrial leaders in network technology innovation, delivering superior business products and business solutions to its clients around the world. Huawei Technologies on the other has well established end-to-end capabilities for various network carriers, enterprise and consumer markets by providing competitive solutions and services that have been deployed in over 170 countries and regions, serving more than one-third of the world’s population.

Huawei is also the first Chinese brand to enter Top-100 Interbrand list. That is quite an accomplishment..

U Mobile Activates 3G Network Expansion Across Peninsular Malaysia and into East Malaysia by 2013

Good news for Malaysians and U Mobile subscribers as the most dynamic and innovative telco in Malaysia has expended its 3G mobile network across Peninsular Malaysia and soon into East Malaysia by early 2013. This is made possible after an agreement between U Mobile Sdn Bhd and Maxis Berhad to share the latter’s 3G Radio Access Network (RAN).

From L to R: Bill Chang (Chief Corporate Planning Officer of U Mobile Sdn Bhd), Kenneth Chang (Directoof U Mobile Sdn Bhd), YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Vincent Tan (Chairman of U Mobile Sdn Bhd), En. Jaffa Sany Afiffin (CEO of U Mobile Sdn Bhd), Datuk Idris Abdullah (MCMC Commissioner) and Too Tian Jen (CTO of U Mobile Sdn Bhd)

I was invited to the official launch and activation of U Mobile’s 3G network in Berjaya Times Square and was really happy to witness this historical event. The activation of U Mobile 3G network represents a major milestone for the local telecommunication industry as it is the first such initiative in Asia.

I’m a U Mobile subscriber since 2011 and I’m really glad that the 3G network expansion is finally complete. Now I can have better 3G coverage all over Peninsula Malaysia on my U Mobile device. I was having difficulty getting 3G signal in along the North-South Expressway but now I can enjoy 3G coverage all the way up to Penang.

Currently, U Mobile has its own-built 3G network infrastructure in core cities within the central, northern and southern regions of Peninsular Malaysia covering the densely populated urban areas of the Klang Valley, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Perak, and Johor. So there won’t be any 3G network congestion at all since it will be on U Mobile’s own network infrastructure.

Through the RAN sharing activation, U Mobile expands its 3G coverage to every state in Peninsula Malaysia, covering major cities and towns including Kangar, Alor Star, Kota Bahru, Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu, and Melaka. In selected area where 3G services are still being deployed, U Mobile subscribers can still continue to roam effortlessly on 2G coverage which is available via U Mobile’s 2G domestic roaming partnership with Maxis which is currently serving 95% of the population.

This partnership and sharing of 3G RAN is definitely beneficial to the consumers. With U Mobile’s competitive call and data plans, consumers will have more affordable plans for their mobile devices. Soon more consumers will get to enjoy such benefits as U Mobile’s provisional 3G network services to East Malaysia remains on schedule and will be launched in early 2013.

U-Mobile the most affordable postpaid data plan in town

U-mobile recently launched a new campaign with new postpaid plans for first jobbers and young executives – a marketing initiative which will definitely excite many young adults that have just join the working class. U-mobile also had a ‘facelift’ of their branding and it has proven to be very effective.

I decided to get myself a new Android Smartphone and a new postpaid line from U-mobile. Surely with a Smartphone, I will need a data plan so I decided to go with the lowest data plan package that they have to offer just to try it out.

The U28 plan is U-mobile’s lowest pricing data plan available and you can’t get any better than this. The plan offers 1GB of data plan with 300 free SMS for only RM28 per month. Phone charge to other network is only 20 sen per minute and you only pay per use. However, I’m not concern about the phone charges as I don’t intend to make many calls with this phone. What I really need is a device with mobile internet and U28 fits my budget perfectly.

My job requires me to travel around town quite extensively and I depend on Google map to get to my destinations. With my new Android Smartphone, I was able to get around unfamiliar grounds without any fuss. Much alike when I need critical information from the Internet, I can always depend on my Android Smartphone wherever I am.

I am also being entrusted with the task of moderating a number of Social Media sites.  During the recent AFC Annual Awards 2011 in Kuala Lumpur, I managed to provide LIVE TWEETS with the help of my Android Smartphone. Tweets were updated almost instantaneously thanks to the speedy connection of U-mobile 3G network. Speediness is essential when it comes to Social Media. Followers want to know the result immediately and it’s was good to have a reliable and fast 3G network.

Talking about speed, I did a SpeedTest on my Android device with U-mobile line recently and the results are amazing.

I did a comparison with 3 other Smartphones with 3 different networks. A HTC Sensation on Maxis line. A HTC Desire S with U-Mobile and lastly, a HTC Wildfire on DIGI line. This test was done in an enclosed room so the network connection wasn’t that great. However, I can still see a great difference from the 3 Smartphones and their network speed.

U28 comes with a 1GB data plan but I get an average of 1Mbps download speed. However, the upload speed is not that impressive with an average of 100kbps.

A quick comparison with other 3G network providers, I found that U-Mobile is really a value-for-money service as you get almost the same speed and services as other network but only cheaper. Now this is a plus point especially when you need a data plan that fits your budget.

Now U-Mobile’s coverage is excellent within Klang Valley, I get almost a constant speed wherever I go within the Klang Valley. However, when I took a trip to Genting Highland, I found out that I can hardly get a decent 3G coverage at all. It’s definitely a downside but I was told that U-Mobile is expanding their 3G coverage quite rapidly.

What I really appreciate most about the U28 plan is when I hit my quota of 1GB; I can still access the Internet. Yes, U-Mobile will never block your Internet access and will definitely not charge for any excess data usage. And all that for RM28 per month is just simply unbelievable.
