Review : Robin Hood (2010)

June 7, 2010 by Galvin Tan in Entertainment with 2 Comments

I’ve been a big fan of Russell Crowe since the movie Gladiator in 2000. Directed by Ridley Scott, the Gladiator have won 5 Oscars with another 45 wins & 79 nominations. Ridley is reunited with Russell Crowe in 2010 for the movie Robin Hood. You’ve probably heard many Robin Hood stories, but trust me when I say, you haven’t heard it all. Here’s my review of the 2010 edition of the movie, Robin Hood.

The Plot
An archer in the army of King Richard the LionHeart who fights against the Norman invaders soon finds himself returning to England as more than the person he is.

Birth of a legend. Following King Richard’s death in France, archer Robin Longstride, along with Will Scarlett, Alan-a-Dale and Little John, returns to England. They encounter the dying Robert of Locksley, whose party was ambushed by treacherous Godfrey, who hopes to facilitate a French invasion of England. Robin promises the dying knight he will return his sword to his father Walter in Nottingham. Here Walter encourages him to impersonate the dead man to prevent his land being confiscated by the crown, and he finds himself with Marian, a ready-made wife. Hoping to stir baronial opposition to weak King John and allow an easy French take-over, Godfrey worms his way into the king’s service as Earl Marshal of England and brutally invades towns under the pretext of collecting Royal taxes. Can Robin navigate the politics of barons, royals, traitors, and the French?

The Cast
Starring Russell Crowe (Maximus of Gladiator) as Robin Longstride, he soon became the protector of Nottingham and given the name Robin Hood. Cate Blanchett plays the mesmerizing Marion Loxley or better known as Lady Marion, a widower from Nottingham who soons fallen in love with Robin Longstride. Mark Addy, Kevin Durand, Scott Grimes and Alan Doyle are also in the movie as Merry men Friar Tuck, Little John, Will Scarlet and Allan A’Dayle accordingly. Prince John, brother of King Richard The Lionheart who soon took over the crown is played by Oscar Isaac who soon got betrayed by Godfrey, who is played by Mark Strong.

The Summary
I enjoyed this movie and was rather impressed by the amount of detail Ridley Scott puts into this production. However, he could have done more on characters development for the Merry Men. None of them spoken anything significant that is memorable.  Rusell plays a great role as Robin, however he did get confused at time as to what part of old England he came from. The set and scene were outstanding and the costumes was absolutely gorgeous. With a good sequel and a little improvements, it could be the movie of the year.

I give it a 4/5 rating.
