Tech Kaiju Arena Face-Off: Ninetology U9X1 vs Lenovo K900

Tech Kaiju Arena is blogging initiative by Ninetology to promote creative and responsible blogging. DECODING GALVIN has taken up the challenge to do a review on two Android devices in the most light-hearted manner. In this post, I will be giving my unbiased views and opinions to my fellow readers on these two devices. So, if you like what you read, don’t forget to share this post.

As a war between giant androids and monstrous green robots wages on, humankind has fallen behind with choices and decisions that are ever harder to make. While all these latest monstrous androids may closely look-alike, they are indeed different in many ways in agility, strength and sizes. And here’s an epic battle between these two green giants, in a round by round combat to find out the top green giant that will serve humankind better.

While many of these monstrous giants are getting bigger and bigger, size does play an important role in the survival of the fittest. Ninetology U9X1 stands tall at 137.8 mm with the width of 69.9 mm. With a depth of 10 mm, the U9X1 is rather slim and mean. Equipped with a 4.8-inch display, its Super AMOLED HD is good resolution up to 720 x 1280 pixels. Weighing at 160g, the Ninetology U9X1 is definitely a Mark III category green android giant.

The Lenovo K900 is a relatively new green android giant. Standing really tall at 157 mm, it has the width of 78 mm but with a slimmer form of 6.9 mm. its IPS LCD 5.5-inch capacitive display, screams 16M colors with resolution up to 1080 x 1920 pixels. The Lenovo K900 is categorized as a Mark IV green android giant.

The K900 thumps U9X1 in viewing experience with larger screen size but being big all the time isn’t all that good. The K900 can be rather clumsy at times due to its massive size.

Verdict: Ninetology U9X1 ZERO (0) – (1) ONE Lenovo K900

Round 3 - Core Strength

Being this gigantic you need to run nuclear engine. While the K900 may not be running on nuclear engine, It is however, packed with a Dual-core 2 GHz Intel Atom Z2580 processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. Such processing prowess enables the K900 to do multi-tasking without any complication. The K900 also pushes 5499 points in the Quandrant Standard test, a rather impressive results for a bulky giant.

On the other hand, the U9X1 is running on slower MediaTek’s 1.2GHz Quad Core processor. Although having only 1GB memory, its 16GB internal storage and expandable to 32GB via MicroSD slot gives it the edge. On the Quandrant Standard test, the U9X1 pushes 4045 points putting it way on top of other noticeable Android giants such as Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Optimus 2X.

Quad-core processor power keeps the U9X1 ahead in battle of Androids although it is still way behind the monstrous K900.

Verdict: Ninetology U9X1 ZERO (0) – (1) ONE Lenovo K900

All the latest Android giants are equipped with super cameras, a distinction feature of each individual Android. Ninetology’s U9X1 too comes with 13-megapixel back camera and 2-megapixel front facing camera. Its superpower includes f2.0 Aperture, 2nd Generation BSI, HDR, Zero Shutter Delay, Panorama shooting, Face Detection, Fast Burst Shot, HD video recording (Video Effect).

The K900 is equipped with similar 13-megapixel back camera with autofocus and dual-LED flash and a front facing 2-megapixel. Its superpower includes geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection and a vast collection of photo effects.

While both giants are equipped with similar super camera, the K900 once again thumps the U9X1 in image quality and consistency. While the K900 shoots rather decent photos, the U9X1 is still rather inconsistent with its colour and struggling on autofocus.

Verdict: Ninetology U9X1 ZERO (0) – (1) ONE Lenovo K900

After three rounds, it is pretty obvious that the K900 is on a league of its own. Even though the rigid unibody form of the K900 is built with metallic brush finish, its enormous size makes it rather hard to handle with single hand and even harder for a human with smaller palm size. In this case, its metal body is much suited for the K900 to endure any hard knocks or tumbles.

U9X1 on the other hand is sleek and handles easily with a single hand. The glossy finish shines fear into enemy’s eyes although it is only to cover up the weak construct of its plastic body. The U9X1 is built for agility but the volume and power buttons scream for help for being too weak and small.

While it’s great to have a bigger and stronger built, the K900 may not fit comfortably into the front pocket of your jeans and pants. However, the U9X1 slips in easily into any pocket of your shirt or pants.

Verdict: Ninetology U9X1 (TIE) Lenovo K900

It’s obvious now that these Android giants are from different category and the one from the higher category will definitely step as a winner. But this last round will prove to be the decisive point for humankind. The price war is definitely the toughest round especially with more and more same category Android giants emerging on this planet. The Mark IV Lenovo K900 may be well as tough and as powerful, it also losing out in the price war especially with a price tag of RM1,699. Much tougher green giants from similar category are striking at around that price which may easily put the K900 to shame.

However, the U9X1 strives at the price war. With the price tag of RM1,099, the U9X1 is definitely one of the toughest giants in its category. The humankind will definitely benefit more from an Android giant that excel in the price war. And with more Android giant like Ninetology’s U9X1 out to compete, the world will definitely be a better place.

Verdict: Ninetology U9X1 ONE (1) – (0) ZERO Lenovo K900

This post is made possible thanks to the good people from Ninetology for loaning both the U9X1 and K900 to us. However, I would like to put in some extra comments from a layman’s point of view. The Ninetology U9X1 is a new smartphone player in Malaysia, and it’s definitely getting some recognition over the short period of time. Their U9 series Android smartphones are definitely making a hit amongst Malaysians who are looking for quality smartphones but without the high price tag.

After spending a week with the U9X1, I’m quite happy with its overall performance. Speed and processing prowess are not much of an issue. The only thing I find very uncomfortable is the glossy and plastiky body. Then again, a silicon or rubber casing can fix that problem easily.

So ask me if I will recommend the U9X1 to anyone, I would say, give it a try yourself first. It’s a matter of choice and preference. I like the U9X1 for the price tag and the awesome Quad-core I’m getting, but it may not be the same to you. So in this case, my preference for an smartphone is the price tag and with the quad-core thrown in, the U9X1 definitely won my vote.

Verdict: Ninetology U9X1 ONE (1) – (0) ZERO Lenovo K900

The Art of Notebook: 10 Blogging Tips for Beginners

Write a Short Story and Win a Lenovo 320GB hard disk.

When I first started my blog back in 2005, I didn’t know what to do. Blogging is relatively new to Malaysians and I spend most of my time searching for blogging tips online. Over the years, I’ve picked up some really useful blogging tips and it changed my life forever.

As Lenovo’s Book of DO ambassador and representing the Art of Notebook, it’s only right for me to pay-it-forward by sharing some blogging tips with all of you budding bloggers out there. Whether you’re new to blogging or wish to start a blog, follow these 10 blogging tips and you’ll be rolling like a pro in no time.

1. Define Your Goals

Just like every other decisions you made in life, decide what you want and go for it. But before you even start, you need to know what you want. Different people have different reasons to start a blog. Whether it’s for personal use of for your organisation, you need to define its purpose. I started my blog because I wanted to improve my writing. I find a reason to put in an entry everyday and eventually, I got my blog running.  So know what you want, define your goals and move ahead.

2. Know Your Audience

When I started my blog, I find myself blogging about anything and everything under the sun. Eventually, I found myself writing more on interesting gadgets and food that I eat every day. I soon realized that I begin to get readers who share similar interest commenting on my blog.  That’s when I decided that I’m going to be a gadget and lifestyle blogger. When you have a blog, you will eventually have readers. Your blog reflects who you are and whom you’re attracting. So know who you are attracting and give them what they want to read (usually it’s what you want to blog about).

3. Be Consistent

Once you’ve established your blog, your blog is a brand. And like any other brands, you need to have an identity. The only way to build an identity is to be consistent. You need to be consistent throughout your blog. Be it your design or how you write your blog. KEEP AWAY from using multi-coloured fonts in your postings unless you’re trying to attract younger age readers.

4. Be Persistent

The best way to keep readers coming back is to always have something new (and meaningful) for them to see. Nobody likes old news. So, try your very best to keep your blog updated as frequent as possible.

5. Be Inviting

Perhaps the most important part about having a blog is the social aspect of it. Most blogging platforms such as and WordPress do have a comment tool. It’s a platform for two-way conversation between readers and yourself. Readers will read your post and leave their comments. So try to reply their comments if possible. Even a short one liner will do.

6. Be Visible

Unless you know SEO (Search Engine Optimization), your blog will not go anywhere if you don’t do anything besides blogging. Much of your blog’s success relies on your efforts outside your blog. The best way to get your blog known is to visit and to share comments on other blogs. NO, never advertise your blog on another person’s blog. Instead, try contributing your thoughts and share comments on their blog. When commenting on their blog, you will need to fill in your name and blog URL, that’s when you start getting visible.

7. Take Risks

There are plenty of blogging tools available out there. Dare to take risk with these tools and make full use of it. Exclusivity is the key to attract more readers and it won’t come easy. Be ready to sacrifice some precious time digging into certain topic that may be interesting to your readers.

8. Ask for Help

The Internet and especially the blogosphere are forever changing. Even the most experienced bloggers may find themselves entangled in the World Wide Web at times. So do not be afraid and be ashamed to ask for help. I’m many experienced bloggers are willing to share their knowledge if you ask nicely. I’m lucky enough to have a number of close friends whom are bloggers too. So whenever I’m stuck with something technical regarding my WordPress blog, I will ask for their help.

9. Keep Learning

A wise man once told me that learning is a never ending cycle. You will never stop learning. The moment you stop learning is the moment you are buried six feet underground. Even though I’ve been blogging for the past 6 years, I never stop learning. Or else, I wouldn’t be writing this post.

10. Be Yourself

At the end of the day, your blog is an extension of who you are. What you write is what you’ve perceived. So write as you wish and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Even if you’re not good at writing, try and keep trying. Eventually, you’ll get things right.

Why I Like the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s Ultrabook

I still remember when I had my first notebook. It was really bulky and rather heavy. Had it for few years and then got myself a netbook. It which was handy enough and small but it’s taking ages to load and not the best device in the performance department.

It took somebody quite a while to realize that the CD-rom in a notebook is not really necessary especially when USB flash drives are much more popular for file storage. So they decided to take away the CD-rom, reducing it size and weight and giving it some extra juice to last longer with an extended battery life without compromising performance. Hence came along the Ultrabooks.

I’m currently using the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s ultrabook and I totally love it.  Lenovo has been in the forefront of mobile computing and the IdeaPad U300s is definitely one of the best Ultrabooks in the market.

I love the fact that that the U300s is lightweight and easy to carry along wherever I go. Although I admit that a tablet PC is always easier to bring along but it still lack a physical keyboard and most importantly, the additional storage space that I need. I work a lot on Adobe Photoshop and I had it installed in my U300s. I can now work remotely without having to carry the excess weight but still have the power to do some extensive photo editing.

My favourite moment is when I spent my days lazing on my bed at home catching up on my next season of Fringe. A full charge can last me for hours before I have to plug it in. So it’s good enough for me to catch a number of episodes before I doze off.

Well, as much as I love the U300s, I gotta admit that it can be a little pricy (starting from RM3,299). Many of my friends claim that they can get a Macbook Air for slightly more but then again, it’s always a matter of choice. Some love apples and some love oranges. There’s always an option for everyone but as for me, I’m pretty happy with a Lenovo for now.

Review: Lenovo IdeaPad U300s for Social Media and Gaming

After spending weeks with the U300s, I’m beginning to grow pretty fond of it. I’ve been carrying it with me to almost everywhere I go. Besides being super lightweight, it’s also amazingly easy to use.

The U300s is my best companion during the football weekends. While watching football matches, I like to share my thoughts and exchange comments with my fellow friends on social media.  It pretty sums up that the ultrabook such as the U300s is meant for the next generation of Internet users.

Social Media

While its technical specs allow me to do higher performance stuff than on my desktop PC, the U300s is definitely meant for the Social Media generation. Being a Social Media junkie myself, I’ve been depending on my smartphone to keep myself connected.

I’ve got quite a number of Social Media software installed on the U300s and I use all of them whenever I’m connected to the Internet. Some people will say that it’ll be much easier to use a Tablet PC if I’m only using it for Social Media. But being an aspiring blogger too, I depend very much on the U300s’ portability and power to get my posting and images done. Oh yes, full QWERTY keyboard and track pad are really much needed here.

I go around places a lot and I deal with a high resolution photos all the time. Having the ultra-portable U300s with me does make my life so much easier. With the Intel 1.8GHz Core i7 processor, downloading and editing these hi-res photos on the go are extremely fast and easy. The long battery life means I can get more things done without a power source nearby.

Posting tweets are really fun with the U300s. Everything I need to send out a tweet, I just pull out the U300s, flips it open and I can almost instantly get connected to my home Wi-Fi and start sending out tweets. Although without the “Instant-On” feature like such on the Acer Aspire S3, the IdeaPad U300s boots up almost as fast as the Aspire S3. The only difference is I need to hit the power button to get it booted up.

I used to spend a lot of time on computer games when I was much younger. Now being a much mature adult, I try minimal time on gaming. However, to test the gaming performance of the U300s, I took on my copy of StarCraft II and got it installed on the U300s. Now we all know that StarCraft II is a graphic-intense game but with the Intel® GMA HD 3000 graphics and loaded with 4GB DDR3 memory, U300s is showing no signs of slowing down. I’m impressed.

Ask me if I would buy a Lenovo IdeaPad U300s ultrabook as a ‘portable game console’, I would so no. Although it has got the power and ability to run graphic-intense games, the U300s ultimately is not a gaming machine. It’s everything else portable, but not a gaming machine.

Review: Lenovo IdeaPad U300s Ultrabook – Features and Performance

While it’s easy to fall in love with the IdeaPad U300s, one must not judge a book by its cover. I’ve been using the IdeaPad U300s for couple of weeks now and there are a few things that I like and dislike. So let me quickly run through some of the things that I discover about the IdeaPad U300s.

First of all, the U300s that I’m having has a dual-core 1.8GHz Core i7-2677M processor and 4GB of RAM running on Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium. There’s a variant unit with Core i5-2457M processor.  The U300s also has a 256GB SSD storage to achieve its 20-second boot and 15-second resume times thanks to Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0 for Windows® 7 with RapidDrive SSD technology. This enhancement is extremely useful to meet today’s demand for instant access to your ultrabook and then the Internet.

Battery Life

The U300s has a rather impressive battery life to my liking. Lenovo claims that it can last up to 8 hours but that’s based upon some scenario test. As for me, the U300s is giving me at least 3 hours on the Internet accessing social media sites not including YouTube. Even when I’m watching HD quality movies, with a 13.3” HD display, I’m still getting good battery life on the U300s. Now please note that these are based on my personal experience on my preferred brightness display. Results may vary.

Stylish Keyboard

If one thing that I really like about the U300s, it would be the keyboard. The chiclet keyboard is more than just another ordinary keyboard. Although I don’t see any much different from any other keyboards, this keyboard is indeed special. It’s what Lenovo designed as ‘a Breathable keyboard’ that uses Intel® Advanced Cooling Technology to improve airflow so PC can run cooler on your lap. Like!

The cool-touch palmrest and intelligent glass touchpad with easy scroll, zoom and rotate functions is really neat. Although the aluminum shell gives a nice smooth surface for my palm to rest but I tend to get a bit greasy after prolong usage. And I feel that the touchpad is a tad too smooth for me to scroll.

Surround Sound

I love watching GLEE on the U300s. The HD graphics and stereo speakers with SRS® Premium Surround Sound™ make my GLEE experience much more entertaining. Then again, with a powerful processor and 4GB of RAM, watching anything is always a gleeful experience.

Key Specifications

  • Up to 2nd generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology 2.0
  • Up to Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium
  • Boot in as little as 10 seconds with Enhanced Experience 2.0 RapidDrive SSD technology*

  • Integrated Bluetooth® and high-speed 802.11n Wi-Fi
  • Integrated USB2.0 & USB3.0 connectors
  • Integrated 1.3M (720p HD) webcam

 Admirable Features

  • Cool-touch palmrest

  • AccuType keyboard with individual rounded keys for comfortable and accurate typing
  • Anti-theft protection; tracks the computer and alerts you when it tries to connect to the Internet, in case of loss or theft

The U300s is packed with some awesome features and serious performance. With a powerful Intel® Core™ i7 processor wrapped around with a one-piece aluminum Clementine Orange shell, a gorgeous HD display and supreme surround sound, the U300s is definitely in the race with some of the top ultrabooks in the market.

Review: Lenovo IdeaPad U300s Ultrabook – Unboxing and First Impressions [Video]

Long after Intel have decided to jump-start its new ultrabook category, many top PC makers, including Lenovo have finally decided to jump into the ultrabook bandwagon.

Although it’s been months since after Lenovo launched its range of ultrabooks in Malaysia, I’ve just recently managed to get my hands on an IdeaPad U300s ultrabook thanks to the good people from Lenovo Malaysia.

With many other ultrabooks out in the market, such as the Acer Aspire S3 and Asus Zenbook to name a few, Lenovo definitely do not want to be left behind in the ultrabook race. Many of these ultrabooks are out to knock the Macbook Air out of its perch, including the IdeaPad U300s – but does it have what it takes to do so? Well, we’ll find out soon enough as I will be thoroughly going through the IdeaPad U300s for the next couple of weeks.

Hardware Design – Sleek and Shiny

Even after seeing so many promotional photos of the U300s, I still can’t believe how beautiful the U300s is. Lenovo has definitely taken much attention into details of the U300s and definitely a different approach to many ultrabooks that wants to look more like a Macbook Air.

The brush aluminum sheet that wraps around like a book cover and the rigid form makes the U300s uber-cool and definitely the most unique design from Lenovo so far. The super lightweight U300s is also really comfortable to hold in your hands and to be able to tug it underneath your arm is definitely a plus point.

Even better is the inner part as you flip open the machine. The similar matte finishing palm rest is really tough and the 13.3-inch HD display is just perfect for a machine of this size. The palm rest area, for once, is clear of any stickers or labels which can be rather annoying after it gets worn out, leaving behind sticky residue all over.

As much as I love the U300s so far, I have to say that I’m rather disappointed that there is no memory slot for SD card. It would have been perfect for a photography enthusiast like me to carry along the U300s with an easy access to download my photos into the ultrabook especially when I have to travel a lot. However, the U300s does come with 2 USB ports and a HDMI port.

First Impressions

I, for once, love the brush aluminum body and especially in Clementine Orange. But, of course, the uber-cool design is intertwined with a really thin chassis which is something to die for as well. Unlike the Macbook Air, the U300s is only 0.58 inches thick and weighs 2.9 pounds. It is also slightly smaller than the MacBook Air with a dimension of 12.8 x 8.5-inch. Although it is lightweight and easy to carry around, the limited number of ports available and lack of memory slot left it a little less desirable.

Overall, if ask whether I’ll get the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s, I will still consider getting it for the sheer delight of its ultra-portability and uber-cool design.
